Abstraction - Nex

Videos like these are such a fascinating art form to me. They are not always trying to tell a narrative and linear story but they are more of a visual piece of art meant to provoke thought and feeling. My mom is an artist and she has curated shows that have included almost every medium and she has done her own work as well. I spent my entire childhood in Mass Moca walking through the different installations and the beauty of the abstract. My entire life I have been surrounded by graphic designers, traditional artists, videographers, sculptors, and writers who have talked about their process and what their art means to them.

The interviews, such as Pipilotti Rist and Stan Brakhage’s, were especially eye-catching. Rist spoke about her art with a casual grace that few can achieve. It's always interesting to hear what people were thinking when they were turning their idea into a reality.

My favorite videos among these were from Peter Mack, the stop motion illustration was visually interesting to me. Habitat was also very striking for me, not only for the visuals but also the sound choice which elevated the piece.,

Abstract art has always been intertwined with my life and it will always be one of my favorites activities to dissect the pieces and what the artist has said about them.

  1. I'm glad to hear that you have a background in these kinds of concepts, and a natural penchant for issues of abstraction. I would have liked to read in this response a bit more depth, therefore, into some of the work that supports your ideas; work that you did not respond to; and some of the connections between these vastly different approaches to non-narrative time-based media. Sometimes, when we're exposed to a lot of resources out there, it can be a little crippling to our creative process. That's my experience, anyway! As you draw on your own background, try to use fresh eyes on the work that you see and experiments that you produce to find your voice and opinion in it all. Looking forward to hearing about your ideas!
