Fundamentals of Video

In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, there is a scene where a knight is running endlessly, until he stabs one of the guards and he runs into the castle. the scene makes use of time passage and parallel editing to create the illusion of the knight running in place. I felt the scene didn't look good, because the knight didn't look very convincing and the guards looking at him didn't really add anything to the scene. Next is the music video for Daydreaming, where a man walks through a bunch of doors that lead him to other places. the video uses lighting and continuity editing to create an illusion of cohesion. I feel the effect of the video wasn't convincing, it was edited in a way where you didn't feel the effect, the focus was on the man rather than the effect. Lastly, there's Coffee and Cigarettes, an anthology film that consists of shorts centering on coffee and cigarettes. in the film, Roberto Benigni and Steven Wright have a conversation about coffee and cigarettes. The scene uses pacing and cross cutting to create a sense of fluidity. The scene was very fluid and was edited very nicely. The use of cross cutting was very fluid. the scene was very well staged, and the pacing was fluid. This scene was very effective and was made very effective use of cross cutting and pacing.

  1. Thanks for your thoughts here, Gavin. As you write more responses like these, and engage with more and more outside references for the class, try to find some connections between the clips, and apply your observations to your own plans for video assignments. How might Jarmusch's staging and editing decisions help you to structure your own dialogue scene?
