Continuity and Dialogue
the first clip I choose to analyze was the diner scene from Mulholland Drive, In this clip David lynch uses the camera as a third perspective to give the viewer a sense of presence in a surrealist environment. The conversation is between two friends, one of whom is riddled with alarming dreams of the same diner where they are currently eating. The important topic of this conversation are the "dreams" one of the characters is experiencing, because the dialogue present effects the way the camera captures the scene. The camera is not static or stationary and sways back and forth, it creates this haze-like effect as if to imply a surrealistic feeling that this too is not based in reality but in a dream. The lighting through this scene appears to be creating the visual representation of "half-night" the time at which each of these dreams appear to be taking place in. Once the characters exit the diner, the character steadies to what I assume is a narrowing of focus, a grounding back to reality or what is perceived to be reality. As the characters travel down the back alley, the perspective switches back and forth from a first person perspective to a tracking shot of the charters, that us until the characters come face to face with the being plaguing the character's dream.
The second video I chose to watch was the Paul-thomas Anderson directed music video for Radiohead's Daydreaming. There is not spoken dialogue between characters present in this video, but if you analyze the video there are times where the main character is speaking to the camera or the viewer. Throughout the video, we watch a journey take place one where the character we are following opens many doors, each connecting to a seemingly distant place that should be behind the doors the character is traveling through. so throughout scene there is now continuity of environment, but there is a continuity of emotion. The way the camera tracks this character conveys a sense of longing, loneliness and wondering. What we are viewing is someone who is losing grips with the reality he is present in, and is trying to craft one that he can find peace in. This may be a stretch, but when he enters the final door and sees the mountain is as if he's meant the end of his journey. The mountain is framed as this giant wall, and is placed in the background against his smaller frame. Later while climbing this mountain, the lighting of the shot is almost pitch black with a hue of blue present. robbing the character of his defining features and he almost blends in with rocks in the background. He finally sees a cave with fire present and lays down besides it. Once he lays down, we see him through him the fire and only his face is framed. we can see the fire bouncing off of his eyes and we can tell he's found warmth, and finally found a peace.
Great breakdown of the Radiohead music video—you've done well to analyze some of the formal choices (lighting, color, compositional hierarchy) and bridge them with an interpretation of symbolism. The only term that I want to clarify is "continuity." I agree that there is not continuity of environment, as each space changes in a discontinuous and surreal way; however there is, importantly, continuity in editing. This clarification will help us wrap our heads round these techniques and terms for our our editing purposes. The main character is edited to appear continuous as he passes between these surrealistic spaces. Nice work to breakdown Lynch's scene as well. In future responses, try to weave some of these observations together, and incorporate your own production ideas as well.
